Public Space

After reading all of the assignments in my Reading Culture book, I have to say the point that really sticks with me is that your town lives in you. This doesn’t go for everyone, but it does go for those people who are passionate and love their town. Cities and towns don’t just form over night. They take years to really make it. They see all the different people passing through, the babies being born, and the old passing away. When you think about it, those old homes and old offices, they’ve been there for years. You, you may have just moved in. You might be the third or fourth family to live there, or you could be the fiftieth. You don’t know, but the town does. There’s so much history and culture there. Most people take those things for granted. When the majority of people passing an old church just give it a glance, there are some of us out there that really take it in. We give it a good look and realize how many years it has probably survived. How many people have worshipped there throughout those years. It’s so interesting to me, and so mysterious. I think that is what we need to think about when we see public spaces. Look at it as if you are immortal and you sit atop the building watching the days go by. From that position, it’s amazing.
